About 3

3 is an Austral/Asian collaboration, exploring the beauty and interplay between the live and virtual body. The project takes place between Canberra and Penang and follows a Creative Australia International Engagement funded exchange with Maitree and their unique skills specialising in XR experiences and movement.

3 is a meditation on time: a monochromatic aesthetic driven by the impact of the minutiae of physical and emotional change.

3 moments

3 dimensions

3 women of different ages take the notion of a moment in time as a genesis – past, present and future, presented in a visceral dialogue of real time, film and the virtual realm.

3 explores the potential of XR in the interplay between body, identity and cross-cultural exchange in the Metaverse. XR enables symbiotic interaction and exchange between real and virtual bodies. The nature of the technology allows movement to create and direct visuals in a projected environment which the dancers inhabit and respond to.

Movement quality of 3 ranges from tiny detail through to sweeping percussive phrases and emotions, drawing from contemporary and South Asian dance. We strip back the complexities of detailed AI art to create a reflective and meditative environment draw by dancers. The process becomes a potent transfer of knowledge which is deeply significant for my ongoing development as a mature artist of calibre living with invisible and acquired disabilities.

Who:

Our team are all collaborators and of international esteem.

Maitree are unique in their skills specialising in XR experiences and dance, embedded with disability experience and advocacy.

Dancers Luvenia Kalia (Maitree) and Jareen Wee (Liz Lea Creates) are exquisite. Their experience and training in South Asian dance, along with my own, speak to an intricacy, fluidity and suppleness of movement imagined for the work.

...one of those extraordinary works that defies categorisation...

Seeing Dance, August 2022

What a highlight RED was – quite a statement and an inclusive and unique work. It was
everything and much more than I expected. Congratulations!
I laughed in many parts and had tears running down my face in others. It was so touching, so
beautiful, it blew me away.
Liz, what a marvel, loved the show… so honest, so entertaining, such versatility, such stamina, I was exhausted after the first dance..what a talent!
